Galen

* * *

The last fingers of daylight were fading from the sky. It was almost time for the bonfire. Galen was worried.

He reached high up into the cupboard to pull down more stuff for Nathan. It was a bit awkward teetering on the kitchen chair, but he was glad to help. Anything to take his mind off the thoughts that were weighing heavy on him.

Og had apprised him, quietly, as to the situation with Seth. He’d felt for the man, without knowing his story. When one erected defenses like that, it was near impossible to break them down. Pretty much took an act of God, and from where he sat, there weren’t quite enough of those to go around. Meanwhile, he had his own worries tugging at him.

Where the hell is Zach? For fuck’s sake, it'd been hours. He couldn't wait to see him walk through the back door. First, he'd punch him. No decision to make there.

Then…his mind roamed the various possibilities. A kiss on the cheeks. Even better, a big fat kiss on the lips, and then…

Hmm. That particular and then would have to wait until later. They really weren't out officially as a thing yet, and he wasn’t quite sure of Zach’s comfort level. Though the family, the gang had to know something was going on. They weren’t stupid.

He hefted down the gear, plunked it on the table, to its groaning creaks. “There. Is that it, or do you want the stuff in the back, too?”

“No, I think we’re good.” Nate perused the punch bowl along with the extra sandwich platters. “You're handy to have around.”

Then he turned to Seth, took in the apron tied around his middle and the somewhat crude hors d'oeuvres the man had painstakingly fashioned, all laid out on a wooden pastry board. “And you.” He slapped Seth on the back. “They look a bit weird, but hey. You got the job done. Right?”

“Weird and wonderful, that’s me. I’ve almost finished this other batch too.” Seth scooped up the last bit of the cheesy mixture, fingered it onto a scrap of oddly cut puff pastry, then dabbed a cranberry on top.

Nate chuckled inside. It'll be dark. Maybe someone will eat it.

Og came up from the basement with two shopping bags full of supplies, and also noted Seth’s first attempt; the array of saltine crackers with spam on them, the tiny smattering of greenery dotting their tops.

“It looks edible, that. Though is that stuff,” he pointed at what looked the tiniest bit like parsley, but wasn’t. “…safe? None of our body parts will fall off?"

The skin at the corner of Seth's eyes crinkled. “Shouldn’t.” He looked at Og with a straight face. “Unless you have it with booze.”

Nathan howled. “Nice one. As if…hey, what’s this?” An envelope fell from the portfolio he’d grabbed, trying to get it out of the way of the ever-growing mound of food. He opened it, scanned it, and his face paled.

Og crossed quickly to him. “Honey, what is it?”

But when Nathan looked up, his gaze was on Galen.
